Albert
Germany, late 1930s: Albert is a young man full of joie de vivre, even though he lost his parents at an early age and had to constantly adapt in order to find a home. When World War II begins, Albert is drafted and fights as a soldier in Norway and Russia. He survives, though only barely and severely wounded. Finally back home, however, Albert does not fall silent like so many others of his generation; instead, he becomes a vehement opponent of war, repeatedly sharing his experiences. And he becomes a loving family man who also experiences many wonderful things in the young Federal Republic of Germany. Illustrator Sebastian Jung tells his grandfather’s moving story through the medium of the graphic novel: Designed like a notebook, the book alternates between text, drawings, original documents, and photos, connecting the past with the present in an extraordinary way. Sebastian Jung’s debut won the AFKAT Hamburg Graphic Novel Promotion Award in 2016. In it, he not only traces his family history but also a crucial chapter of German history.
