Passport Hacker

In February 2021, a letter from the German registration office stated that a passport photo had expired and needed to be renewed after ten years. At the photo booth, the process was governed by a strict set of rules:

Look straight ahead / No closed eyes / No smile / No hat / No hair on the face / No glasses

The machine provided immediate feedback to ensure each requirement was met. This raised the question of whether the system could be subtly challenged without breaking any rules. A series of small, creative experiments followed, exploring how far the boundaries could be pushed while still remaining within the official guidelines. After several visits to the photo booth, a photo taken there was finally submitted (The Half Beard). Surprisingly, the photo was accepted by the registration office. The project became a humorous reflection on bureaucratic rigidity and on how creativity can occasionally slip through the narrow cracks of formal systems.
